Alongside growing VLCC, she had to manage the demands of motherhood, with her eldest daughter only seven at the time.
Vandana also faced challenges as raising children while launching a business was no easy task. But as we know, luck and destiny favor the brave; she got immense support from her husband and family. Vandana worked hard to set up VLCC’s services, create wellness programs, and grow the brand across India. However, she always prioritized her daughters and family.

Vandana has received multiple honors, including the Padma Shri in 2013. Poonam Sharma
Poonam Sharma is a shining example of how passion and perseverance can turn problems into opportunities. She was living a very normal life with her husband and children. However, her world turned upside down when her husband lost his job. Their financial situation worsened, and her children had to move from a good school to a cheaper one.
But Poonam was determined to change her situation and secure her family’s future. The challenge was that she had only studied till class 8. Plus, she had to manage household duties while recovering from a paralytic attack in 2020. But Poonam was determined and took small steps. Starting with stitching, she shifted to cooking/tiffin service and later built her millet-based snacks business called “Dadi ka Pitara”.
She sought help from self-help groups, trained other women, and built a team to step in when she couldn’t. Gradually, her business scaled; and went international. Dadi ka Pitara now has 100+ millet-based products (snacks, sweets, etc.)that sell across Delhi-NCR, Chandigarh, Jodhpur, the USA, and Canada. She even gave employment to 120+ women and trained over 500 women.
Geeta Patil
Just like Poonam Sharma, Geeta Patil is also an example of a mother who turned a crisis into an opportunity. In 2016, her husband lost his job, leaving her with the responsibility of raising two young boys. With no regular income, the family faced financial instability, worrying about both food and the children’s education.
However, Geeta was very confident in her cooking skills. In fact, her mother, Kamlabai Nivugale, ran a small tiffin/catering service, packing meals/tiffins. Due to a household to run and children to raise, Geeta decided to start cooking from her home with minimal investment. She learned stirring, cutting, and cooking at a very young age, and those skills helped her come out of financial crises.
Geeta launched ‘Patil Kaki’, a venture selling beloved Maharashtrian snacks such as modak, puran poli, chakli, poha, and chivda. Even her sons used to help pack orders and sometimes deliver them. Vinit, her son, took charge of marketing and brought the business online. Today, Patil Kaki serves more than 3000 customers a month and generates an annual revenue of 1 crore.
Indira Dhar
Indira Dhar is a visionary filmmaker and director from Bengal who made waves with her debut film Putul. As a single mother to her son, she faced the challenges of raising a child alone, managing finances, and balancing her dreams with motherhood. Inspired by her love for Satyajit Ray’s films, she turned her passion for storytelling into filmmaking, focusing on scripts and narratives.
She juggled long hours, funding issues, and artistic compromises while preparing baby food, carrying her son Kabir, and attending meetings. Indira even sold personal belongings (jewellery) to fund her film and relied on small, committed teams. Later, Putul was shortlisted in the Oscar category (Best Picture, among others) for India in 2025. Chanda Kochhar is a renowned banker and former CEO of ICICI Bank, celebrated for her leadership and trailblazing journey in finance. Managing a top corporate position, she had to carefully balance work commitments with her responsibilities at home.

With just 500 rupees in hand, no income, and three children to raise, she had to find a way to earn. Krishna enrolled in a pickle-making course and learned the art of pickle-making.
With very little capital, she began selling jars of pickles on the roadside. Her children helped with the preparation, and her husband assisted in selling. She cleverly used simple marketing tricks like offering free drinking water at her stall, giving out sample pickles to passers-by, and joining local fairs to attract customers. Slowly, people began to trust the taste and quality of her products.
Over time, she expanded her range from just a couple of pickles to more than 250 varieties, including pickles, chutneys, murabbas, and herbal juices. Today, her business is known as Shri Krishna Pickles. In 2014, Krishna proudly received the NG Ranga Farmer Award for Diversified Agriculture from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She has also been honored with several other awards, including the Nari Shakti Puraskar by the Government of India.
Yangmila Zimik
Yangmila Zimik is a true example of how a woman can achieve anything once she decides to. Born in the 1970s in Ukhrul, Manipur, she faced financial struggles and social stigma at just 21. Her husband left her, refused alimony, and she had no support while raising her child. As a single mother, she had to shoulder every responsibility on her own.
Yangmila faced challenges like managing expenses, her child’s education, social stigma, and finding a steady income. On top of that, she received very little acceptance from her community in Ukhrul, Manipur. But she was determined to have a better life. With just 500 rupees and some wild fruits, Yangmila started ‘Shirin Products’. Using foraged ingredients like roselle, gooseberries, galho leaves, wild berries, and local honey, she began making pickles and candies.
Today, her products are being sold across India, from the Northeast states to Mumbai and Delhi. Her monthly sales cross 1 lakh rupees. Shirin Products offers 40+ pickles, candies, and squash products from wild fruits and organic vegetables. Yangmila has received the Vijaya Lakshmi Das and Assam Women Entrepreneurs Awards for her work in rural entrepreneurship.
